Should you resolve to get more sleep in 2014?

With 2014 just days away, it's time to decide what positive changes you intend to make in the year to come. Will you, like so many others, resolve to shed a few extra pounds? Cut down on your time with gadgets, perhaps? Or simply take more time to appreciate the little things? The possibilities are endless when it comes to self-improvement, but The Huffington Post notes that one resolution in particular could benefit your well-being on several fronts.

According to the source, promising to prioritize sleep may help you accomplish many other long-term goals such as managing your weight and improving overall brain health

"Improving sleep during the nighttime can really be very effective in improving quality of life in the daytime," Dr. Alon Avidan, director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center, told the news outlet in an interview.

We all know that sleep is important, but between the demands of work and family, it can be all too easy to miss out on some much needed shut eye. After all, if you still feel like you are functioning just fine on just a few hours of sleep each night, you may not realize that sleep deprivation is taking a toll on your long-term health. In addition to lowering your day-to-day awareness, a consistent lack of sleep has also been linked to increase risk of early mortality across the board.
