These two super berries may ward off the flu this season

We’ve been discussing the immune system a lot on this blog recently, largely because – as the temperatures begin to drop – we all have to prepare ourselves against the cold and flu viruses that are sure to abound. Previously, we discussed the merits of orange juice and an eye-opening study on the connection between a happy stomach and an emboldened immune system. Today, we’ll cover another piece of research regarding two berries that can really give your body a boost in the face of an ailment.

According to a press release, academics from Oregon State University – the same institution that revealed the bombshell about gut microbes – published their findings from an extensive study of the natural compounds that can bolster immune cells in the body.

The scientists discovered that red grapes and blueberries were especially beneficial for immune function, thanks to two compounds called resveratrol and pterostilbene. These elements reportedly enhanced the effectiveness of an agent within the immune system.

“Out of a study of hundreds of compounds, just these two popped right out,” explained associate professor Adrian Gombart. “Their synergy with vitamin D to increase [cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide] gene expression was significant and intriguing. It’s a pretty interesting interaction.”

More than 400 compounds were tested over the course of this study, but none compared to these heavyweights in terms of immediate impact. From the research we’ve reviewed recently, it’s clear that there are many ways to naturally improve your body’s natural defenses by being selective about food and dietary supplements.
