Study reveals new potential benefit of calcium and vitamin D postmenopause

Calcium and vitamin D are well-known to be a formidable duo when it comes to bone strength. Calcium, after all, is seen as the building block of strong bones, while vitamin D facilitates the absorption of this essential mineral. Given that older women are particularly at risk for skeletal issues including osteoporosis, many are advised to take calcium supplements to counter bone degeneration. Now, researchers have discovered yet another reason that postmenopausal women may benefit from these compounds.

In a study published by the medical journal Menopause, scientists from the Reading Hospital and Medical Center in Pennsylvania monitored the health of women across the country between 1993 and 1998. They observed that females who took a supplement containing calcium and vitamin D demonstrated lower cholesterol levels than those who did not. This led the researchers to conclude that this combination of nutrients could enhance postmenopausal health in more ways than previously believed.

High cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease, stroke and other major conditions that could affect brain health and physical mobility. Though the researchers did not conclude that calcium and vitamin D supplementation could counter these risks, it is still important for women at this stage in life to pay close attention to their diets and nutrient intake. Postmenopausal women particularly are prone to osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, so cutting down on bad fats and seeking out foods that support strong bones is essential.
