Study highlights benefits of movement for brain health

As well as seeking out food and dietary supplements that provide nutrition for the brain, those who are concerned about memory loss and cognitive decline must also remain abreast of the risk factors for serious neural conditions such as stroke. This event is caused when parts of the brain are deprived of oxygen due to a blood clot, and can substantially impair physical and cognitive ability.

Statistics from the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that over 795,000 people Americans suffer from a stroke each year, and one quarter of these events are recurrent.

While research has shown that certain compounds may help mitigate the damage caused by this event, the best way to preserve brain health is to protect yourself with preventive measures. Diabetes and high blood pressure are both associated with stroke, so those who suffer from these conditions must be especially vigilant in doing so.

According to an international study backed the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), researchers have unveiled another risk factor for stroke that can be easily addressed: Physical inactivity.

"The findings revealed that regular, moderately vigorous exercise, enough to break a sweat, was linked to reduced risk of stroke. Part of the protective effect was due to lower rates of known stroke risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and smoking," an NIH press release states.
