Review explores benefits of curcumin for fatty liver disease

It’s well known that consuming large amounts of alcohol can cause liver damage, but there is another ailment that affects this vital organ – one that has nothing to do with liquor intake. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by the build up of fat cells in the liver. In addition to swelling, this condition may also increase the likelihood of liver failure or cancer. According to the American Liver Foundation, NAFLD affects approximately 25 percent of the U.S. population, and though obesity and diabetes are risk factors, they are not necessarily a prerequisite.

In light of the grave health complications linked to NAFLD, a team of researchers from the National Taiwan University and China Medical University have published a review of natural compounds – including curcumin and resveratrol – that may help aid this condition before it worsens.

“Current NAFLD therapies are limited; thus, much attention has been focused on identification of potential dietary substances from fruits, vegetables and edible plants to provide a new strategy for NAFLD treatment,” a study abstract from PubMed states. “Dietary natural compounds, such as carotenoids, omega-3-PUFAs, flavonoids, isothiocyanates, terpenoids, curcumin and resveratrol, act through a variety of mechanisms to prevent and improve NAFLD.”

Incorporating natural compounds like curcumin in your diet could be a boon for your health in many respects. Curcumin has been shown to combat inflammation, promote brain health and the well-being of middle-aged individuals with no serious medical conditions.
