New study shows curcumin may shrink breast cancer tumors

Curcumin – the bioactive ingredient in turmeric – has long been tapped for its medicinal properties across Asia, and a new wave of research has supported much of the age-old wisdom surrounding this compound. To date, curcumin has demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may be applied to cancer prevention, memory support, arthritis treatment and more.

Recently, the medical journal Cancer Prevention Research published yet another study on these potential benefits. According to reports, researchers sought to determine if curcumin capsules that dissolve in the body could supplement current breast cancer treatments. Scientists from the University of Kentucky used an animal model to observe how curcumin capsules affected breast cancer tumor size and proliferation. They found that this compound was linked to a notable reduction in both factors. In fact, the tumors were shown to shrink by as much as 30 percent.

The researchers posited that “the inhibitive effect stems from the spice’s ability to block the hormones that otherwise feed the cancer growth,” Medical Daily reported in its coverage of the study.

The American Cancer Society estimates that one in eight women will battle breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer awareness campaigns have made great strides in terms of public education and early diagnosis rates, but there is still more to be done to combat this prevalent and serious disease. Though there is no outright way to prevent breast cancer, studies like this one increasingly indicate that diet and lifestyle may play a role in risk.
