Study shows curcumin may combat rare cancer

A cancer diagnosis is always daunting, but there are some forms of this disease that can be treated more effectively than others. Mesothelioma is an exceedingly rare type of cancer that affects the cell lining of our organs, the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance notes, and though there have been breakthroughs in treatment, we still have much to learn about this condition and how to counter it.

In recent years, curcumin – the bioactive ingredient in turmeric – has been shown to help control the spread of various cancers including breast cancer and testicular cancer. Recently, the medical journal Cancer Prevention Research published a study on the use of curcumin supplements in conjunction with mesothelioma treatments.

“Inflammation is a key mediator in the development of malignant mesothelioma (MM) which has a dismal prognosis and poor therapeutic strategies,” the study abstract on PubMed states. “Curcumin, a naturally occurring polyphenol in turmeric, has been shown to possess anti-carcinogenic properties through its anti-inflammatory effects.”

Researchers used an animal to observe how curcumin supplements could contribute to the death of mesothelioma cells. Ultimately, they discovered that the compound may have “a double effect” on malignant mesothelioma cells by protecting the body against inflammation and spurring cell death known as pyroptosis.

Curcumin has been touted for its medicinal properties for centuries in certain parts of the world, but it is only in recent years that researchers have discovered the scientific data to support these claims. In addition to its potential clinical applications, curcumin has been shown to enhance overall brain health, ease rheumatoid arthritis pain and more.
