Low vitamin D linked to fibromyalgia, chronic pain

If you suffer from symptoms of fibromyalgia or chronic pain, it could be due to a serious lack of vitamin D. According to a recent paper published in the journal Pain Physician, hypovitaminosis D, or vitamin D deficiency, is associated with chronic widespread pain disorders, including fibromyalgia.

To find evidence for this connection, a research team comprised of five doctors from Taiwan gleaned information from different studies published in online databases up until November 2014, looking specifically at reported vitamin D levels. In the 12 studies the team culminated and examined, there was conclusive evidence found to suggest that low levels or a deficiency of vitamin D could be linked to symptoms as well as the development of fibromyalgia and chronic widespread pain.

In addition to vitamin D's correlation to causing symptoms and development, other studies have found that vitamin D supplements can be used to help alleviate or improve symptoms of chronic pain and fibromyalgia. Dr. Florian Wepner of the Orthopedic Medical Center in Vienna, Austria observed 30 patients with vitamin D deficiencies, giving them a daily dose of either vitamin D or a placebo for 20 weeks. Wepner and his research team found that patients who took those regular vitamin D supplements had a "marked reduction in pain" during the study and up to 24 weeks after the study was completed.
