Curcumin supplements may protect heart in face of kidney disease

According to the National Kidney Foundation, approximately 26 million Americans currently suffer from chronic kidney disease. This condition can affect everything from brain health to heart function, as the kidney’s primary purpose is to rid the body of waste and balance its chemical content.

Chronic kidney disease is closely linked with high blood pressure and cardiovascular difficulty – which is the leading cause of death for those with this ailment. Recently, though, researchers from the National Institute of Cardiology in Mexico revealed that curcumin – the bioactive ingredient in turmeric that is well-known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties – may be able to address this connection.

“In chronic renal failure, the pathogenic mechanisms leading to cardiovascular disorders have been associated with increased oxidative stress, a process inevitably linked with mitochondrial dysfunction,” the study abstract states. “Thus, in this study we aimed at investigating if curcumin pretreatment exerts cardioprotective effects [and] its impact on mitochondrial homeostasis.”

The scientists found that mice who were given curcumin supplements before developing chronic kidney disease were less likely to experience cardiac difficulties. This, the abstract notes, is likely because the compound reduced the cell damage caused by oxidative stress.

Further research must be conducted in order for curcumin supplements to be adopted in kidney disease treatments, but this study does highlight yet another health benefit of an already advantageous substance. Past research has also shown that curcumin supplements may be key in slowing or preventing the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as restricting the growth of certain cancerous tumors. In addition, a 2012 study from Ohio State University indicated that taking curcumin supplements daily could improve the overall health of middle-aged individuals without any serious medical conditions.
