Scientists find connection between sleeping issues and serious health concerns

We all know that getting enough sleep is an essential part of staying healthy, since this helps your body recuperate from the day's hardships. Past studies have also indicated that a lack of rest can impair weight loss efforts, which is particularly concerning given the widespread issue of obesity around the world. Recently, researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released further findings about the harmful effects of sleep deprivation. Interestingly, they also revealed that too much sleep can prove equally damaging.

According to a press release distributed by ScienceDaily, the investigators found that sleep abnormalities were associated with various chronic ailments such as heart disease and diabetes, and could exacerbate these issues considerably. With that in mind, the scientists noted that medical practitioners should be mindful of sleep patterns when treating patients with such conditions. In addition, individuals who suffer from insomnia, sleep apnea or other disorders that prevent them from getting the rest they need should consider consulting a doctor to ensure they aren't aggravating other issues.

"It is important to understand that both the quality and quantity of sleep impact your health. A healthy, balanced lifestyle is not limited to diet and fitness; when and how you sleep is just as important as what you eat or how you exercise," said Dr. M. Safwan Badr, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, in the press release.
