Shape Magazine touts heart-healthy benefits of curcumin

Though heart disease continues to pose a substantial threat to long-term health in America, organizations like the American Heart Association have made great strides in terms of educating the population about warning signs and risk factors. In addition to engaging in regular exercises and avoiding cholesterol-laden foods, individuals may be able to reduce the likelihood of developing this condition by seeking out ingredients that have demonstrated pro-heart health properties.

In order to promote this effort, the fitness publication Shape Magazine featured a list of 20 versatile and nutritious foods that researchers have found to be “artery-cleansing” as well. Alongside olive oil, pomegranate and broccoli, the source singled out turmeric – and more specifically, its bioactive ingredient curcumin – for its ample health benefits.

“[Turmeric] contains curcumin, which lowers inflammation – a major cause of arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)” alternative medicine expert Dr. Gregg Schneider told the news source.

In addition to combating this hardening process, past research has shown that consuming curcumin may reduce the arterial buildup that often characterizes heart conditions.

However, the health benefits of curcumin supplements extend well beyond the heart. A study conducted at Ohio State University last year revealed that middle aged individuals who took Nutrivene Longvida Curcumin every day for four weeks saw a significant improvement in overall health that could leave them less susceptible to many age-related ailments.

While this study focused on how curcumin supplements could benefit individuals without preexisting conditions, past endeavors have also shed light on its ability to potentially prevent the spread of cancer cells and even slow the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
