“Real” foods are essential for a Down syndrome diet, says nutritionist

Down syndrome is a complex condition that can leave those affected more susceptible to a number of major medical concerns, including cognitive development issues and gastrointestinal difficulties. To help manage some of these complications, therefore, it is important that people caring for individuals with this chromosome-based disorder consult a nutritionist about devising a comprehensive Down syndrome diet that takes these concerns into account.

Recently, Sona Parma Mukherjee – a clinical nutritionist in the United Kingdom – reviewed some of the dietary challenges faced by people with Down syndrome in an article for the Daily Nation.  Mukherjee references the fact that many children diagnosed with Down syndrome experience digestive problems including gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. In addition, they are also more prone to certain sensitivities, such as celiac disease. 

To avoid aggravating some of these issues, Mukherjee advises her patients to focus on digestibility and, if possible, avoid overly processed and manufactured foods. Instead, she notes that natural foods with a high nutrient content, such as fruits and vegetables, can play an important part in managing gastroinestinal problems.

“Since digestive issues are common in children with Down syndrome,” writes Mukherjee, “a truly digestible diet can go a long way in preventing or treating yeast and/or constipation issues as soon as they appear.”

Keeping a food diary that also documents adverse reactions can also help ensure that your child’s diet is promoting his or her health and development, and will be useful to have if you need to voice any concerns with a physician.
