Losing weight can help improve vitamin D intake

Maintaining a healthy body weight is key to living long and well. Obesity is associated with mortality risks like heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and cancer, among others, making it all the more important to eat right, work out regularly and try to keep your weight down to a healthy figure. But according to a study performed in Canada, obesity presents one more significant health risk: It can keep vitamin D levels suppressed.

As Amy Rushlow, a contributing writer for Yahoo! Health, notes, vitamin D is only really effective when it's absorbed into the bloodstream. But being a fat soluble, vitamin D can also be absorbed into your body's fat, taking it right out of the blood and impeding the effect that this nutrient is supposed to have for your overall health.

"So if you have a large body with lots of body fat, that's when where the vitamin D goes," Paul Veugelers, the study's author and director of University of Alberta's Population Health Intervention Research Unit, tells the source.

Consequently, when vitamin D is absorbed into fat rather than the bloodstream, it doesn't provide any of the intended benefits to your metabolism. While this can helped somewhat by taking a larger degree of D3 vitamin supplements, it also provides yet another incentive to lose some of those excess pounds!
