Healing foods to add to your plate

What we eat plays an important role in our overall health and well-being. Take a look at some essential “super foods” that may be able to cure everything from a scratchy throat to high cholesterol.

  • Buckwheat honey: A spoonful of sugar may help the medicine go down, but a spoonful of honey may stop coughing altogether. In a recent study at Pennsylvania State University, two teaspoons of brown honey were more effective at limiting bothersome cough symptoms than over-the-counter medicines. Honey boasts important antioxidants and antimicrobial properties that can help soothe irritated throats.Try adding honey to your tea next time you have a cold.
  • Pears: A medium pear has five grams of dietary fiber in the form of pectin, which can help flush out bad cholesterol and lower your risk of developing heart disease. Try chopping up pears and placing them in your heart-healthy oatmeal or salads.
  • Raisins: If you want to lower your blood pressure, you should start to snack on raisins. “Sixty raisins—about a handful—contain one g of fiber and 212 mg of potassium, both recommended in the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet,” writes Prevention Magazine. “Numerous studies show that polyphenols in grape-derived foods such as raisins, wine, and juice are effective in maintaining cardiovascular health, including bringing down blood pressure.”
