My daughter, Chelsea is 6 years old, and has Down syndrome. When she was born, I wasn’t sure where to turn or what to expect. Nutrivene gave me hope for my daughter’s future.
Chelsea attends a private Christian school where she thinks she owns the place! Chelsea was very blessed at birth, not having any heart issues. The only surgery she has needed is eye muscle surgery. Her health at birth, along with being supplemented with the Nutrivene protocol since she was 4 months old, have allowed her to develop like a typical child. Chelsea runs, plays on the playscape, swims, rides her 2-wheeler with training wheels, bowls, goes to Brownie Scouts, and basically tries to do…and usually does…anything that her big sister does! I can not say that Chelsea would not be doing the same things had she not been given Nutrivene, but I can say that taking the supplements has helped her immune system fight off sickness, keeping her healthy, therefore giving her a better opportunity to learn.
Chelsea takes the Nutrivene-D Daily Supplement, probiotics, essential fatty acids, and the recently added gingko biloba supplement. The results have been very encouraging. Her short term memory has improved greatly, to where she can tell me everything,in detail, that she has learned in school, which she attends from 8:30 am-3:00 pm. Her retention of material taught, both in school and during therapy, has greatly increased.
Chelsea is truly a blessing to our family, a little ray of sunshine that carries with her all the hope of the future God has planned for her. It is a never ending battle getting those around her to see and accept her potential. Nutrivene has made that a little easier by helping me keep my child healthy and her brain working and developing all the time. Those who are closet to Chelsea are encouraged by the progress that she so steadily makes and look forward to her bright and thriving future.

Jenni-Rose loves to be on stage! Here she is with her friend, Ralph Roddenbery, opening the show singing “Power to the People.”
Events like this keep happening in Jenni-Rose’s life, much to her delight. She’s learned to listen to her instructions, take the stage at the right time and place, do her part, take her bows, and exit gracefully when her moment in the spotlight is over. While on stage she can step up to the microphone and ad lib to get the crowd in the palm of her hand.
I don’t believe any of this would be possible without the help of NuTriVene! It has done so much to help her be focused, alert, and confident – as well as healthy enough to dance and sing for hours on end. What a blessing!

Our daughter Kaci was born 10 weeks premature in March 1997. My wife and I refused all genetic testing during her pregnancy and did not know Kaci had Down syndrome until it was confirmed she had Trisomy 21 when she was 6 days old. On Mother’s Day of 1997 we attended a seminar on TNI in Hazleton, Pennsylvania and ordered the program the next day.
Kaci started the Nutrivene Program as well as Piracetam 2 weeks before what would have been her full term delivery date and has continued ever since. God has blessed us with an incredible child and we are convinced that Nutrivene has significantly contributed to her remarkable progress. So remarkable that Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania has chosen Kaci to represent them as one of their 2006 Miracle Kids for the Children’s Miracle Network.
We have let many other parents of children with Down syndrome know about Nutrivene and we are also used as a family resource by The Genetics department at Geisinger to be available to talk to other families when requested. We thank you for all the research you’ve undertaken to develop TNI for Kaci. The “proof is in the pudding” is definitely true with Kaci.

My child has a history of illnesses including; ear infections, upper respiratory infections, and sinusitis. Will Nutrivene make my child healthier?
Many parents tell us that their children are healthier after beginning Nutrivene. Dr. Lawrence Leichtman, a clinical geneticist, pediatrician, and President of Trisomy 21 Research Foundation, has observed improved growth, immune function, and developmental parameters (speech, gross motor, fine motor, cognitive) in his patients with Down syndrome that have used Nutrivene. Additionally, Dr. M.J. Gelb, a pediatrician from Germany has observed a reduction of infections, increased growth, and a normalization of blood parameters like Selenium, Vitamin A, and Vitamin E.
You recommend providing Nutrivene 3 times per day. Is this necessary?
If providing Nutrivene 3 times per day is not convenient, provide it 2 times per day (divide the total daily dosage in half).
Is Nutrivene a cure for Down syndrome?
Nutrivene is not a cure for Down syndrome. Parents, physicians and therapists (OTs, PTs, etc.) have noted that their children, patients, and clients, respectively, that use Nutrivene seem to be more alert, healthier, and more focused.
Does insurance or Medicaid cover Nutrivene?
Parents have informed us that some insurance companies are covering Nutrivene. Typically this requires a letter of medical necessity from the doctor and a written prescription. We do not bill insurance companies. You would need to submit your International Nutrition invoice along with a claim form to your insurance company. Some states are covering Nutrivene through Medicaid waivers. You should speak with your program services coordinator or caseworker to find out if and/or how you can obtain coverage. Many Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) allow individuals to pay for needed Natural Supplements with pre-tax dollars.

What age should my infant begin taking Nutrivene?
We have many infants taking the product who are just days old. When providing Nutrivene to an infant, we recommend starting at a significantly reduced dosage and working up to a full dosage over a 1- to 2- week period. Nutrivene should be added directly to infant formula or breastmilk.
How do I give my child Nutrivene?
Nutrivene is available in capsule and powdered forms that mix with foods and drinks. A new, better tasting powdered formula was introduced that mixes easily in foods.
Does Nutrivene have any side effects?
Some children experience loose stools with the Daily Enzyme product. Should this happen, we would recommend that your child’s dosage be reduced by one-half. Additionally, some children do not like the taste of Daily Supplement. We have several forms of the Daily Supplement including a Microencapsulated Powder form that has a reduced vitamin taste and mixes well with many foods. We also have a list of taste enhancing suggestions so usually any issues with taste can be minimized.
Do I need a prescription for Nutrivene?
Nutrivene is a dietary supplement that does not require a prescription.
Is Nutrivene FDA-approved?
Nutrivene is not a drug and does not require FDA (Food & Drug Administration) approval. However, as a dietary supplement, Nutrivene does fall under the auspices of the FDA. Nutrivene products are manufactured in a licensed U.S. pharmaceutical facility.

What is Down syndrome?
Trisomy 21, or Down syndrome, is the most common chromosomal abnormality. Unlike other congenital conditions that have a deletion or mutation, individuals with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome 21. This extra chromosome causes “overexpression” of genes that change metabolism and function of antioxidants, amino acids, digestive enzymes, and other essential nutrients. Consequently, growth and developmental patterns may be negatively impacted in children with Down syndrome. Specific disturbances in metabolic pathways attributable to gene overexpression in Down syndrome include: Superoxide dismutase (SOD): With the increased production of SOD, other enzymes are unable to keep up with the detoxificaton of the free radical, hydrogen peroxide. The excess hydrogen peroxide accumulates in the cells and tissues causing oxidative stress and apoptosis (programmed cell death). SAM Cycle: The overexpression of the enzyme cystathionine beta synthase (CBS) disrupts homocysteine metabolism so that methionine (folate dependent) is not resynthesized. Methionine is required for the production of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), a methyl donor that contributes to the synthesis of neurotransmitters (chemical messingers that nerve cells use to communicate with each other in the brain affecting mood, behavior hunger, sleep, etc.) and cell membrane components. Connective Tissue Issues: The gene associated with collagen expression is located on the 21st chromosome and may be responsible for the presence of hypotonia (poor muscle tone) issues common in Down syndrome.
What is Nutrivene-D?
Nutrivene-D is a nutritional supplementation program designed for individuals with Down syndrome. The program includes a Daily Supplement, Daily Enzyme, and NightTime Formula. Nutrivene-D Daily Supplement consists of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other essential nutrients that your child may need throughout the day. Children with Down syndrome may be deficient in digestive enzymes and experience malabsorption problems. Supplementing with digestive enzymes may help your child better absorb nutrients from his or her daily intake of foods and dietary supplements. Premature aging, lower growth rates, and sleep disturbances are also common in Down syndrome. The NightTime Formula provides nutrients needed for normal physiological function between the evening and morning meals.

Other Tips:
•    Try not to mix Nutrivene in front of your child.
•    Refrigerating Nutrivene may reduce some of the vitamin taste.
•    If possible, don’t let your child know when he/she is getting Nutrivene in foods and drinks.
•    Don’t make giving Nutrivene an unpleasant experience. If you have other children who are taking vitamins or if you and/or your spouse take dietary supplements, make it a ritual to take your supplements together so that your child doesn’t feel he is the only one who has to take them.
For Infants:
If your infant is objecting to the taste of Nutrivene in formula or breast milk, try putting Nutrivene in a small amount of formula or breast milk and put in an oral syringe. Squirt the Nutrivene mixture towards the back of the mouth so that you are missing most of your infant’s taste buds. Or, squirt the liquid between the gums and cheek and gently pinch your infant’s cheek to trigger his/her swallowing reflex. You may also provide the Nutrivene (except NightTime Formula) in bottles throughout the day so that you are using a smaller amount of Nutrivene with each feeding.
If you are having difficulty with the bottle nipples clogging when using Nutrivene, you may want to purchase Evenflo Juice Crosscut Nipples.
Note:Â Do not subject Nutrivene to prolonged extreme temperatures such as freezing or boiling.

Introduction
Children and young people with Downs Syndrome and their parents are faced with a multitude of health-related problems. This frequently involves one particular topic, nutrition, being viewed from a professional rather than a parental point of view, which can lead to substantial long-term health problems and risks.
The weight gain in children with Downs Syndrome below the age of 3 is less than satisfactory or moderate at best. A multitude of reasons are given for this, for example:
- The raised incidence of cardiac abnormalities in DS children, especially the increasingly common av canal.
- Abnormalities and deformities of the gastro-intestinal tract, e.g. Hirschsprung’s disease, pancreas anulare
- Orofacial dysfunctions
- Muscular hypotonia
This problem means that the feeding and nutrition for these children is often done in a way that includes, for example, more meals, energy-supplemented nutrition, or even formula feeding and a special diet. This leads more than a few patients and their parents to fixate on nutrition as a problem that everyday life must revolve around.
A large number of test subjects show a BMI progression that crosses the percentiles after the age of 3. Possible causes for this include:
- Maintenance of a higher-calorie diet, e.g. including following reconstructive surgery
- Resolution of orofacial problems and the related disruption of feeding and drinking
- Insufficient exercise
- Development of undesirable nutritional behavior with a preference for certain foods or food groups
These weight and activity problems worsen as children grow older, and possible causes for this include:
- Parental influence over the child decreases
- Facilities including special schools, residential schools, workshops, residential communities etc. do not focus enough on nutrition, nutritional behavior and exercise
Discussion and Summary
The nutritional pattern and problems of children and young people with Downs Syndrome requires close inspection, analysis and, if necessary, early intervention. The first priority should be diet problems involving difficulties with drinking and eating, frequently in connection with moderate or even poor growth levels in young patients. This often also correlates with a range of additional functional disorders such as cardiac and gastro-intestinal abnormalities or orofacial dysfunctions, but also with disruption to the interaction between mother and child. This problem can also resolve itself during infancy, however, in that the quantity of food intake is no longer an issue, but this still frequently results in an inadequate intake of energy. This leads in turn to a BMI that rises steadily as the years go by.
Parents have to be alerted to this problem, and ongoing training is necessary. The advice that we provide during our annual consultations with these patients has not proved to be effective enough. Close monitoring and professional advice that focuses on weight progression and nutritional patterns appears to be necessary. Facilities that look after children and young people with Downs Syndrome also need to focus on this problem.
The nutritional pattern is also the result of a learning process, which means it can be modified and corrected. It is therefore important to aim for the best standard of nutrition possible, particularly from the point of view of preventing nutrition-related illnesses. Generally recognized nutritional concepts such as those from the DGE can be used as guidelines for this.
Children and young people with Downs Syndrome should also be encouraged to participate in sporting activities. Downs Syndrome in itself does not exclude sporting activities, although attention should of course be paid to specific problems such as cardiac genesis. Endurance sports like walking and cycling etc. are ideal, with around 3 sessions of at least 30 minutes every week. Encouraging young people with Downs Syndrome, who tend to prefer more passive leisure pursuits, to take part in sporting activity like this requires a high level of motivation from their caregivers.
We have been collecting data on nutritional patterns in people with Downs Syndrome since June 2004. You are most welcome to help with collecting this data. More information is available on our home page at www.kinderarzt-bretten.de

GAPSdiet.com
Simplified GAPS Outline
Here is a simplified outline of the GAPS Nutritional Program. Please refer to Gut and Psychology Syndrome for more detailed information.
THE NUTRITIONAL PROGRAM
1. Diet
The recommended diet for GAPS patients is largely based on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD). The main difference pertains to dairy products.
SCD permits lactose-free dairy products. Lactose is a milk sugar. GAPS and people with digestive problems are unable to digest it and must avoid it.
Fermented dairy products such as yogurt are largely lactose free as a result of the fermentation process where by the fermenting bacteria consume lactose. Apart from lactose, milk contains casein, which will absorb through the damaged gut lining and act as a toxin in the body.
Another problem with dairy is how it relates to food allergies and intolerances. A milk allergy is one of the most common allergies. Even in breast-fed babies where the mother consumes dairy products the child may develop colic due to sensitivity to dairy antigens being passed through the mother’s milk.
For all of these reasons, GAPS children and adults should not consume dairy products until their digestive system is well enough to handle them. The diet’s only exception to this is milk fat (ghee or clarified butter) because it contains virtually no milk proteins or lactose and is generally well tolerated.
2. Supplementation
The essential supplements for GAPS patients:
A.   An effective therapeutic strength probiotic
B.   Essential Fatty Acids
C.   Vitamin A
D.   Digestive enzymes
E.   Vitamin and mineral supplements
3. DETOXIFICATION AND LIFE-STYLE CHANGES
The first and most important thing is to remove the main source of toxicity, which means cleaning up and healing the gut.
Since this alone will not rid the body of years worth of toxic build up in the system, juicing is recommended. Juicing provides very concentrated fruit and vegetable nutrients to the body in an easily absorbed form.
Black Elderberry is also beneficial and has strong immune-stimulating properties and it is one of the most powerful anti-vital remedies known to man.
The General Toxic Load
An important part of the treatment is reduction of the general toxic load. Keep your house chemical free and avoid bringing anything into the home which will let off chemicals such as new carpet, furniture, and paints.
Also remember that your skin absorbs just about everything it comes in contact with so be very cautious with the products you put on your skin.
Household plants are great at reducing the toxic air in our houses. They consume the toxic gases and replace them with oxygen and other beneficial substances.
This is a brief summary of important points addressed in Gut and Psychology Syndrome. It is very important to read the sections devoted to these areas in the book for a clear understanding of each.

Research has established that zinc metabolism is altered in Down syndrome. This study compared a group of children with Down syndrome with a control group both with children ages 4 to 11 years. Zinc concentrations were significantly lower in plasma of children with Down syndrome.
Abstract
Experimental and clinical studies have established that zinc metabolism is altered in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). The present study intends to evaluate the nutritional status of zinc in children with DS by determining their biochemical and dietary parameters. The investigation was carried out on a group of children with DS (n = 35) and compared with a control group (n = 33), both aging between 4 and 11 years. Weight-for-age, height-for-age, and weight-for-height indexes and diet were evaluated by using a 3-day dietary record. Zinc was evaluated in plasma, erythrocytes, and 24-h urine collection by using the method of atomic absorption spectroscopy. The frequency of short stature was higher in children with DS. Both groups presented high protein content, adequate concentrations of lipids and carbohydrates, and deficit in calories. Adequate zinc intake was observed in 40% of children with DS and in 67% of the control group. Zinc concentrations were significantly lower in plasma and urine and higher in erythrocytes of children with DS. The results allowed us to conclude that the altered zinc nutritional status of individuals with Down syndrome contributes to clinical disturbances that usually appear with aging in these patients.
