Can omega-3 counter diabetes risk?

More than 25 million Americans suffer from diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association, and as many as 79 million more are in the preliminary stages of this condition. This metabolic disorder has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and overall mortality, making it one of most pressing health concerns we currently face. However, diabetes isn't just an American concern – it is also threatening the health of people around the world. Recently, a team of Finnish researchers sought to determine how one compound known for brain support may influence diabetes risk.

According to a study published in the medical journal Diabetes Care, scientists from the University of Eastern Finland have discovered that consuming long-chain omega-3 fatty acids – which can be derived from fish and some brain support supplements – can potentially reduce the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. The study began in the 1980s and included 2,212 male participants between 42 and 60 years old. Approximately 19 years later, researchers revisited these individuals to gauge how their long-term omega-3 consumption had influenced rates of type 2 diabetes.

Overall, 422 men had developed type 2 diabetes, and men who had taken the highest concentrations of omega-3 serum demonstrated a reduced risk of 33 percent.
