  • Cinnamon: “More and more research is being conducted on the health benefits of spices,” reports Fitness Magazine. “Nutmeg, with its nutty, earthy flavor, and cinnamon, which shines with its sweetness, can do a whole lot more than garnish eggnog. Mixing these spices into fruit or vegetable sides can help you lower your cholesterol and maintain insulin levels in the blood.”
  • Collard greens: There’s a reason why your mother always told you to eat your greens! Collard greens are saturated with lots of vitamins and antioxidants. Just be sure to sauté the vegetable in olive oil instead of a high-fat option.
  • Cranberries: Like other colorful berries, cranberries contain important antioxidants that have been shown to ward off certain diseases. The berry can also help lower your cholesterol. However, be sure to avoid sugary options, such as cranberry juice cocktail, which disguises itself as being healthy, but is actually harmful.
  • Pecans: These nuts are an excellent source of vitamin E and magnesium, shown to help support muscle strength. Additionally, they are jam packed with protein, fiber and healthy fats to keep you feeling full. When consuming pecans, stay away from fattening pies. Instead, sprinkle this snack in salads and stuffing, or munch on a few pecans between meals.
