Many children suffer from asthma attacks.

Anyone who has experienced asthma – whether as a childhood affliction or an ongoing condition that has continued through adulthood, knows that this can be an endlessly frustrating illness. Without proper treatment, people with asthma may find their quality of life severely impaired by the possibility of a coughing fit.

While there isn’t currently a cure for asthma, there are a wide range of medications available to help manage the frequency and severity of attacks. In addition, researchers have found that certain nutrients can also play a role in lessening some symptoms.

Study explores how three compounds can help

In 2006 a team of scientists from Tanta University in Egypt discovered that omega-3, vitamin c and zinc, when taken as a nutritional supplements, may be able to help children who experience regular asthma attacks. According to the study abstract, 60 children took part in the experiment. Those who did not receive placebos were alternately given a combination of the nutrients, or took each one individually.

When the study concluded, the researchers found that consuming these compounds in supplement form had a positive impact on asthmatic symptoms like chest inflammation. This isn’t surprising since omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish, nuts and other foods, are known to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Nutrients can’t replace meds

The health website Livestrong explains that, while these compounds may help prevent asthma from worsening, they aren’t a substitute for medical treatment.

“Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids does not take the place of prescription medications or inhalers in the management of asthma symptoms,” the site states.
