March 21st, 2012
April 11, 1996, a beautiful baby girl was welcomed into the world and a day that changed the course of my family’s lives forever.   Already having three beautiful and healthy children, my mother often wondered what it would be like to have a “little number four.”  And on my oldest sister’s 14th birthday, Kate was born.  The excitement, the happiness, and all the planning of bringing a little life into the world doesn’t leave a lot of room to think about the scary things that can happen when a child is born.  Someone once told me God gives us only what we are strong enough to handle.  We can not choose the hand life deals us, but we can choose how to play it.
Kate was born with Down syndrome and a hole in her heart.  I will never know the emotions my parents felt that day in that hospital room; unexplainable joy turning to unexplainable grief and panic.  I was 10 when Kate was born.  When she finally came home, my parent’s kept a united front to keep life as “normal” as possible for us.  We used to go to Myrtle Beach, SC every summer for vacation.  Kate was on a feeding tube that summer because her mouth muscles were too weak to eat.  My mom used to sit for hours in a chair just trying to get 3 ounces in her little body.  And can you believe, my parents voluntarily packed up all four of us kids and drove the nine hours to Myrtle Beach for our summer vacation, feeding tube and all.  When I asked years later why my parents were so crazy to put that much work on themselves, my mom simply said, “I never wanted you children to miss the beach.”  They never wanted Down syndrome to define our lives or Kate’s.  The journey has not been an easy one, but one in which my family has grown and learned from.
Kate has redefined perseverance.  Every day is a struggle. But with each struggle comes accomplishment.  Kate has taught our family that nothing can be taken for granted.  She is so funny and she knows it, and when she cracks a random joke you can’t help but laugh out loud.  Our “little number four” has brought times of sadness, times of heartache.  She has brought joy and laughter; humbleness and patience; excitement and an indescribable love that has changed our family forever.  And to think my parents weren’t crazy enough, they didn’t stop at number four.  When Kate was 5, Hannah was born bringing the clan of kids to five.  Our home is always active, loud, and constant commotion.  But we love every minute of it.
March 21, 2012 is National Down Syndrome Day and today our family will celebrate our little number four that has blessed our lives with tolerance, patience, and so much love. Â Today we all can celebrate the feat and triumph of all the families and individuals that Down syndrome has touched.

The Lemonade Diet, HollywoodDiet, Low Fat Diet, 3-Day Diet, The Chicken Soup Diet – we have heard it all, and each one promises the key to a happier, healthier body. The problem is there is a reason these so-called diets are fads, and come and go with the change of the seasons. If we truly dissect the components of these fad diets, you will see that the mission is not to strive for better health, but to starve our body of the necessary nutrients to survive – which is why no one could sustain any of these “diets” for a long period of time because we would start to break down. The biggest misconception of all is FAT. We have come to associate fats with being “fat,” but not all fats are created equal, and while most of society believes removing it from their diet is healthy, it may be slowly killing them.
Essential Fatty Acids come in two forms, which our bodies cannot make on its own – omega-3s and omega-6s. These good fats are essential for our bodies to function properly and it is important to have a ratio of around 2:1 omega-3s to omega-6s (2). According to Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, a neurologist from the United Kingdom, essential fatty acids (EFAs) have been helpful in “autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, diabetes, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, infections, cancer…(etc)”1. According to research, EFAs have also been successful in treating bipolar disorder, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, asthma, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, lowering blood pressure and reducing inflammation, and preventing heart attacks2.
A new study out of the University of California found that people with high levels of omega-3s in their blood had slowed the normal brain shrinkage by about two years compared to normal aging. The study also found that individuals higher in omega-3s scored higher on neuropsychological tests of visual memory and executive functions such as problem-solving, multi-tasking and abstract thinking3. This gives insight that we can preserve our brain health and memory as we age and lower the risks of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias3.
So why are we so gung ho on avoiding fats at all costs?  Because we have been brain washed into thinking that natural, healthy animal fats and oils are bad for our health because of “saturated fats.” But do you know what these saturated fats actually do? They are heart protective! And they “lower the Lp(a) [a harmful substance which initiates atherosclerosis in blood vessels] in the blood, reduce calcium deposition in the arteries and are the preferred source of energy for the heart muscle”1. It is the processed BAD fats that we want to avoid because processing “changes the chemical structure of the natural oils”1. Processed fats, hydrogenated fats and cooking vegetable oils cause “atherosclerosis, heart disease, and cancer”1. The best sources of good healthy fats are natural animal fats, coconut oil, extra-virgin olive oil, nuts/seeds, eggs, cod liver oil, and fish oils. The next time you go to the grocery store throw your low fat diet list out the window and fatten up to save your health!

I have memories of running around the beach as a child and if not under the umbrella, I was forced to wear the funny colored zinc-oxide on my lips, under my eyes; t-shirt (long sleeves would have been preferable, but my mother finally gave up) and a hat that better have a brim a foot long to block the enemy of summer: The SUN! How often do we hear the hated sun is the cause of all our problems from wrinkles to cancer? Â Or is it?
The medical community and media have engraved in our brains that we dare not step foot outside without a minimum of SPF 15 and guess who raked in the dough? Every brand name cosmetic company jumped on the band wagon and started adding SPF to all their products, and while we thought we were protecting ourselves, cancer occurrences started to climb. This is not to say that hiding from the sun is the direct link to an increase in cancer, but what research has shown is vitamin D deficiency (and the type we get from the sun) puts a strain on our bodies to yield off inflammation and protect us from “serious chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, infections, multiple sclerosis, and more”1. Vitamin D deficiency is in “epidemic proportions in the United States and many other regions around the world…because people do not spend enough time in the sun to facilitate…vitamin D production…”1. An optimal level of vitamin D, which is currently being debated in the medical community, has also been linked to preventing breast cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.
Vitamin D3 can be taken orally, and is a necessary option for those of us who can not jump in the sun on a daily basis. However, sun exposure is the very best way to get our vitamin D because our bodies can readily use it.  “Unlike oral vitamin D3 supplements, sunlight-formed vitamin D sulfate is water soluble.  The water-soluble form can travel freely in [our] bloodstreams, whereas the unsulfated form needs LDL as a vehicle of transport”1.  Also, vitamin D is the only vitamin not found in breast milk, suggesting that our bodies were meant to run and play with our so-called “enemy.”
New reports from National Jewish Health, which will be published in the March 2012 issue of The Journal of Immunology, have discovered how vitamin D acts on immune and inflammatory pathways2. Scientists have identified a new location where the vitamin-D receptor binds directly with DNA to activate a gene known as MKP-1.  MKP-1 is known to interfere with inflammatory responses2. This new information could potentially help individuals suffering from all types of chronic inflammatory diseases.  “The factor that sets vitamin D apart from many other nutrients is that vitamin D receptors are present in virtually every tissue and cell in [the] body”1. So the next time you take a drive to the beach, you may want to take a break from under the umbrella.  Soak up those rays and toast to your health!

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disorder that affects one in eight Americans over the age of 65, according to
the Alzheimer’s Association1. Medical science has been turning to natural spices like cinnamon and curcumin in their research laboratories to test the affects on fruit flies and mice that have been genetically altered to develop aggressive forms of the disease.
Curcumin, a substance extracted from the root of turmeric, has been used in medicine for thousands of years for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-tumor properties. According to new research, it has been shown to “prolong life and enhance activity of fruit flies with a nervous disorder similar to Alzheimer’s”2. Linkoping researchers discovered that fruit flies that were administered curcumin lived “up to 75% longer and maintained their mobility longer than the sick flies that did not receive the substance”2 by reducing the amount of oligomers in the brain. Oligomers are the precursor forms of amyloid fibrils that are toxic to brain and nerve cells, and have been thought to instigate the disease. University of Maryland School of Pharmacy research found that curcumin reduced mitochondrial damage among brain cells as well as providing protection from reactive oxygen species 3.
Curcumin isn’t the only extract that has been around for years that may be assisting in the battle of the brain. An extract found in cinnamon bark, called CEppt, contains antiviral properties that can inhibit the development of the disease1. Professor Michael Ovadia of the Department of Zoology at Tel Aviv University led an investigation with genetically altered mice with aggressive Alzheimer’s. Isolating CEppt by extracting the substance and putting the solution in the mice’s drinking water, proved to slow down the development of the disease1. “The extract…inhibited the formation of toxic amyloid polypeptide oligomers and fibrils, which compose deposits of plaque found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients”1. Although it would require taking toxic levels of cinnamon to reap the benefits of the CEppt extract, researchers are moving in the right direction with this exciting discovery.
These science breakthroughs leave hope for suffering individuals that we can battle degenerative diseases with natural
substances without any side effects that pharmaceuticals can often deliver.

Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)/Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)
Directions for Use
The Trisomy 21 Research Foundation recommends that infants, children, and adults with Down syndrome consume essential fatty acids. However, if the individual consumes fish or eggs fortified with DHA in significant amounts in his or her diet, you may wish to reduce the dosage of DHA. If an infant is being breastfed, the mother may choose to consume DHA herself rather than provide it to the baby. If the infant is taking infant formulas with essential fatty acids (lipils), it may not be necessary to provide additional DHA in the diet.
Essential fatty acid products may be mixed with NuTriVene-D products. For infants, children, or adults who are not able to swallow capsules, you may pierce the gelcaps with a pin or needle or cut off the top of the gelcap and put in infant formula, drinks, foods, etc.
Should your child experience diarrhea while on DHA/EPA products, reduce the dosage you are providing by one-half.
Should you have any questions or comments regarding these products, please contact us at 1-800-899-3413 or (410) 335-2802.
WARNINGS: Omega-3 fatty acids may increase the blood-thinning effects of aspirin or warfarin. While the combination of aspirin and omega-3 fatty acids may actually be helpful under certain circumstances (such as heart disease), they should only be taken together under the guidance and supervision of your healthcare provider.

Advanced Antioxidant Daily Supplement in Microencapsulated Powder
Directions for Use
Upon receipt of your first order only of NuTriVene-D, introduce 1 product at a time, beginning with Daily Supplement, then Daily Enzyme, and lastly the NightTime Formula. Begin the Daily Supplement at ½ of the recommended dose and work up to full dose by end of week. At Week 2, add the Daily Enzyme at ½ of the recommended dose and work up to the full dose by end of week. At Week 3, begin the NightTime Formula at ½ of recommended dose and also work up to full dose by end of week. For infants under 3 months, we recommend starting at Âş the recommended dose of each product and work up to the full dose of each product after 2-week periods, i.e., Daily Supplement – Weeks 1 & 2, Daily Enzyme – Weeks 3 & 4, NightTime Formula – Weeks 5 & 6.
DAILY SUPPLEMENTÂ Â (2 or 3x per day)
The Daily Supplement should be given two or three times per day and preferably at meal times. Providing Nutrivene more than one time per day will help to keep the water-soluble vitamins and nutrients in your child’s body for longer periods of time. The Daily Supplement microencapsulated powder can be added to apple juice, applesauce, yogurt, infant formula, or anything else that can help to mask the taste. It is not necessary to divide the product exactly with razor blades, scales, etc.
When adding the powder to liquids, add the powder to a small amount of liquid first. Thoroughly mix in order to remove powder balls, then add mixture to larger amount of liquid. Product will not completely dissolve in liquid. Product may also clog regular bottle nipples (Evenflo Juice Crosscut Nipples work well). You may wish to use devices for introducing medicines to infants such as large droppers, oral syringes, etc.
DAILY ENZYMEÂ Â (2 or 3x per day)
Gently pinch and twist the ends of unbanded capsule and pull apart. Sprinkle one-half to one-third of daily dose into juice or food. Enzymes should be mixed with Daily Supplement. Capsule should be reattached and stored for future use. If your child has been diagnosed with acid reflux, the Daily Enzyme should not be used. If your child experiences diarrhea or an increase in spit-up after using the Daily Enzyme, discontinue use and contact us at (800) 899-3413 for changes in dosage instructions
NIGHTTIME FORMULAÂ Â (1x per day)
Administer capsules or gently pinch and twist the ends of the unbanded capsule and pull apart. Add required dosage to juice or food during last snack or feeding just prior to bedtime. Reattach capsule for future use. Administer NightTime Formula only one time per day just prior to bedtime. *Important: We do not recommend providing the NightTime Formula with protein sources, i.e. milk, yogurt, baby food meats, ice cream, etc. as protein may interfere with the absorption of nutrients in the NightTime Formula. Further, protein sources should be avoided one hour before and after providing the NightTime Formula. The NightTime Formula may be given with juice drinks, canned fruits, applesauce, etc. If your child is an infant, you may include the NightTime Formula with infant formula and/or breast milk. Should your child experience a change in sleep patterns, reduce the dosage by one-half or contact us for assistance
- - Do not provide your child with any additional vitamin & mineral supplements other than Nutrivene, unless directed by your physician or other healthcare practitioner.
- - Do not microwave or freeze Nutrivene for any extended periods of time.
- - Do not leave lid off of Nutrivene for extended periods of time as exposure to oxygen can lessen the potency of vitamins.
For added freshness, Nutrivene may be stored in refrigerator. In warm and humid environments, Nutrivene should be stored in the refrigerator

Over 5 Years of Age
12 hour fasting prior to blood test
No Nutrivene (Daily Supplement, Daily Enzyme, NightTime Formula) the night before and morning of blood test (If using essential fatty acids and/or Piracetam, these should also be eliminated the night before and morning of blood test)
Suggested Laboratory Tests
CBC (Complete Blood Count) ñ every 6 months until 6 years of age, then yearly
Thyroid Testing – T3, T4, and TSH every year for life
Atlantoaxial X-Rays (Neck) – at 2 years of age, especially in active children (looking for atlantoaxial dislocations)
There are many laboratories that can complete blood testing. Talk to your physician about the lab they use for further information.

Issues of reimbursements
Many Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) allow individuals to pay for needed Natural Supplements with pre-tax dollars. Using these accounts can save people 20 to 30% of the final costs of these goods. However, in order to qualify for reimbursement, most plans require a signed form by your prescribing healthcare provider outlining your diagnosis and stating that the supplement recommended may be useful in improving your health. To investigate reimbursement for Natural Supplements, follow these steps:
- 1. Visit your prescribing health care provider to discuss integrating natural/dietary supplements into your plan of care.
- 2. Have your provider write and sign a letter including your diagnosis and his/her recommendation of specific supplements for that health reason
- 3. Use this form to assist your prescribing healthcare provider with providing the information necessary to determine if HSA/FSA account may be used to cover the costs of supplements.
Please note that some insurance carriers and HSA/FSA administrators ask that the message from the healthcare provider come to them on office letterhead or a prescription pad to validate that the authorizing letter did indeed originate from the prescribing healthcare provider’s office. Therefore, if choosing to use our sample information form, you may want to consider asking your provider to staple a piece of their office letterhead stationary to the form to validate that it originated from their office.
For further information on what is eligible for HSA/FSA reimbursement visit the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf.
